A Small Cinema are coming to Rotherham this April. Visit us at the Old Market Gallery and immerse yourself in a traditional cinema experience that has been absent locally for well over 20 years. Breaking from the mould of impersonal multiplex cinemas we offer some refreshing alternatives: Our trailers are not blockbuster movies but adverts made with local shopkeepers, and our t…ickets are only 25p so that everybody can be involved. If that isn’t tempting enough, ice-cream intervals are firmly on our agenda as we believe our staging and local focus are paramount.

Thursday 21st April

Please join us as the Rotherham mayor cuts the red tape at 6:30pm and our box office opens for business. We will be screening archive footage, a series of short films by local directors and showcasing local shops in our special commissioned trailers. We will also be launching our cinema heritage exhibition. There will be plenty of locally brewed beer and music after the films are finished.

Friday 22nd April

We are thrilled to be joined by Small Cinema founders Sam Meech and John Oshea. They will be joined in conversation by Old Market Gallery curator Peter Martin discussing the project and the importance of local cinemas. This will be followed by a series of short documentaries and the first Market-Screen, a collection of artists’ films.

Saturday 23rd April

Please join us between 11am-1pm for our kid-screen, where we will be showing cartoons and animations especially for our junior customers. From 2pm – 5pm we are thrilled to be hosting the Unravel Project who need YOU to come to the gallery and help them in their quest to make the longest hand drawn film in Britain. You will get the chance to draw directly onto 16mm film and see your creation at the end of the day. All ages welcome. This will be followed by our evening screening at 6:30.

25th April to the 13th May the gallery will remain open so that viewers can come inside and view our supporting material as we have explored the history of cinema in Rotherham and documented your memories on our gallery walls and view Market-Screen in our cinema space.

With so much to do and see we hope you can come down and share in our traditional cinema experience. If you would like to be a part of our small cinema team please email peter@oldmarketgallery.com
